Here's something new from my local cable/telco/isp who uses 100% Com21 equipment :

Cable Modem Security
GCI offers two distinct cable modem networks that users can choose to be a part of. One is the "Peer-to-Peer" (PtP) network, and the other is the "Non-Peer-to-Peer" (NPtP) network. The PtP network allows cable modems to directly communicate with each other, while the NPtP network does not allow this type of communication. We are in the process of refining these networks in order to offer a new service that no other Internet Service Provider currently offers. By the end of June, GCI will have converted the NPtP network to a "high-security" network. Users choosing to have their cable modem participate in this network will be transparently protected from hackers on the Internet and on the cable modem network, but will still be able to fully utilize the Internet at the high speeds they do already enjoy. The PtP network will continue to operate as it does today, allowing in-bound connections to computers that have been configured to accept them (e.g. web servers, mail servers, game servers). All cable modem users can choose between either of these networks at any time, and without additional fees. Static IP addresses are only available on the PtP network. GCI will post announcements when the transition to the high-security network will occur, as some users may need to re-acquire an IP address or reboot their machines at this time. Further information about the two cable modem networks, the services available on them, and the upcoming transition will be posted on here over the next 2 weeks.

In the local ADSL vs Cable shootout locally, cable is getting 93% of the sign-ups with nearly zero churn at $39.95. Once you've got it, you keep it !
