I am certain that this says more about men's desires and comfort levels than it does about women. Men are only attracted to strong women when they look like Uma or Diana Rigg or Sigourney Weaver.

After women already have children, and are losing our looks anyway, what difference does it make how we look or act, men aren't interested in us no matter what; then, we remake ourselves in our own image.

The story about Lillian Hellman was interesting, but I know men who knew her, and they said she was fascinating but hideous. Although smoking and drinking do destroy one's looks. I suspect that Hammett and she had the basic alcoholic co-dependent relationship, and that she looked much better through beer goggles.
