I do think that Hellman was a better writer than Hammett, although I do like both of them very much. I don't know which of them was lionized more during their life together, do you?

As for beer goggles and U-Hauls, it was a comment on the fact that men and women want completely different things out of sexual relationships. I know that some men make loyal, devoted spouses, but there is the male tendency to want to conquer new women, preferably beautiful women, and if they are gay, then they find it quite difficult to be monogamous. Women on the other hand like to have committed relationships, although they do have flings outside the main relationship. In general, this is of course subject to individual differences.
