That's exactly what I meant.. anyone can have a good design, but it's the execution that's the important part. Now for some strange reason I can't quite figure I think AMD might actually pull this one off (maybe it's because they just can't screw up anymore). Maybe it's Atiq, maybe it's cause I think Jerry is actually scared of losing his 'baby'. I'm not sure why, but I think they will be successful.

Do I think this spells the end of Intel. Not really. I've been very impressed with Intel's new found interst in the low-end and willingness to compete in a market that Intel initially thought would 'go away very soon'. I think now we may soon have 2 balanced players making for one hell of a market. I think have a strong AMD and a strong Intel is excellent for both since they will be pushing each other so hard there will be no way a start up can compete.

I mean if you think it's incredible that a start-up would go after x86 now, imagine if you have 2 strong players pushing the tech faster and faster. The barriers to entry would just get larger and larger. There is already some evidence of this happening, look at the problems that IDTI and Rise have had. Now Cyrix may be almost gone, but they certainly did better than I think IDT will do in the long run. Rise has good tech so they may be bought before they vanish.

In a nutshell, the best thing for *both* AMD and Intel to do, is slow up on the price cutting, make some money, and grow the market. Then both can be nice and happy. They need to focus on getting the high-end market out of the PA-RISC, MIPS, Alpha camp and into the x86 camp.
