I do care if they make very concrete claims based on that belief,
and build power-constructs and wage wars and wrap themselves in an impervious cloak
of dangerous unreason based on what they claim are instructions from that ineffable
entity.

I agree. Totally. Which is why you have never heard me make any such claims, and never will. My relationship with God is my own, only to be fully shared with those people with whom I have developed an immense trust. My worship of God is between myself and God. It only becomes public when the world attempts to interfere with or intrude on that relationship by trying to force me to do things which would violate my obligations to God.

However, having said that, it is also true that I have a related moral sense which DOES inform my public activities. And I admit that at times I have tried (and probably will in the future try) to impose my moral beliefs on the world. For example, I was trying to impose my moral beliefs on others when I sat in segregated restaurants in the South to try to force their owners to abandon their beliefs about race and the rights of minorities and accept my beliefs.

And I would suggest to you that there are many, many examples of persons of faith (of many different faiths) quietly living transforming lives, and, relatively, surprisingly few "Chris Lands and Emile Vidrines and ann angels." It's just that the latter are vocal and vehement and in-your-face, and the former just go quietly about their work without intruding on your life or trying to challenge your beliefs.
