Hugh;

Let's think about this rationally....

If you have, for arguments sake, a 10Mbs pipe, how could you divide it up?

You could use 64kbs for 1 voice channel
You could ALSO use 4.9Mbs for data AND simultaneously
You could use the other 5Mbs for video

OR any other combination you choose.

What is so hard to understand about that?

Hugh, in a DIGITAL system, like DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) everything going down the pipe is DIGITAL. That means it is a collection of Ones and Zeros. (Dont believe me....go get a Computer Science 101 text).

Given that all digital data is comprised of ones and zeros, it is meaningless to the conduit (in this case a DSL "pipe") what the ones and zeros represent to us. To the DSL circuit and to the computer it is all the same thing, just lots of ones and zeros. Plain and simple.

So, it does not matter if some of the data (the ones and zeros) represent voice and other represent video and still others represent web pages or email, to us, the human beings. To the computer and the DSL circuit its just ones and zeros.

Now, a regular (POTS) phone line is different. It is an ANALOG circuit. That is why you need a Modem (MOulator DEModulator) to commmunicate digitally over an analog line. You should really read up on communications before putting any money into any communications technology shares.

As for the chips, tell that to Alcatel, Orckit, Fujitsu, Aware and, oh yeah, Globespan, companies that actually HAVE technology.

Buyer Beware!
