Interesting comment in Barron's Story on Level 3 Communications which is building a global fiber optics network.

Level 3 also plans to use ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switches that break voice transmissions into larger-than-normal data packets. This facilitates faster reassembly at the other end. Level 3 also will dedicate certain of its network lines or channels to more time-sensitive data packets such as voice, at least until network equipment maker Cisco and other firms develop the next generation of routing equipment and protocols that will allow different classes of traffic. Voice obviously will get express treatment.
