I am not going to try to rival marcos in a very pointed answer. Mine is a bit different.

For many years it worked like a charm to say that one was Roman Catholic--my father, who was Protestant, used this charm to rid himself of all sorts of proselytizers! Unfortunately, it is not as effective these days.

One of my dearest friends for many years was a Jehovah's Witness. (I don't need to say more, do I?) Yet one of the bases of our friendship was that we respected each other's faiths and did not violate boundaries. We talked about religion and enjoyed our conversations; it brought us closer, in fact.

The reason it worked to our benefit--as can be the case with politics, the other big sore point that most people dodge for fear of killing a friendship--was the respect.

The people stomping all over your boundaries are showing you no respect as a person. To these people, before I shut the door in their faces, I offer a reminder: The Gospels were "good news" and not a club to use on other people.
