The school made the rules very clear up front. Every student going on the trip signed a statement that they understood the rules and understood that violating them would result in a five day suspension (which involved inability to participate in the graduation ceremonies). And, of course, underage drinking is a criminal act, and all the students were underage (which is 21 in Washington). I happen to believe in that rule -- it protects the students who don't want to misbehave by giving them a socially acceptable basis for resisting peer pressure by saying they wouldn't risk not participating in the graduation (a socially acceptable basis for resisting peer pressure is a vital thing at that age). And obviously (to me) once the students had knowingly and intentionally broken the rule and been caught, the rule had to be enforced. (I am disappointed at all the students who participated and at what they did to spoil my daughters' big day. I am only angry at the parents who refused to allow the school to enforce its rule against their daughter without facing a major lawsuit -- and they had the money and chutzpah to do it.)

But I don't think it was overreaction, either in the rule itself or in the enforcement of the known and published penalty when the rule and the law were broken.
