Hi Frank,
Re: Wireless Solutions at broadband rates.
Thanks for the useful and timely reply.
Let me respond slightly out of sequence to your posting.
BTW, would you happen to know if the cost of the wireless service in your example covers a dedicated fractional T-1 port to the Internet at the router level, and disc space in the SP's POP, as opposed to being pooled with others like dialup and most forms of cable modem and ADSL services are today? What other differentiating qualities does it possess that I couldn't get with cable modem or dsl in other words? Curious. Doggone it Frank, I was just starting to feel "caught up". <g> I see a couple of vendor calls in my immediate future. I'll link appropriate responses to this post this week. I know one thing for sure though. At 45,000' from the CO, no xDSL solution is feasible in our neighborhood. And regrettably, the MSO HFC network stops about 2 miles short of here. It's Roadrunner service and it's quite popular in town, for a very good reason. Kudos to the engineers who didn't put too many subscribers on one headend. Cable internet access, when bundled with CATV is ~$35/mo. plus $10/Cybersurfer modem rental. (So, about $80/mo. all in with no voice capability yet.)
pre-existing voice model they have used for decades in order to ensure their quarterly dividends. I too am concerned that they will attempt to extend it forward into what is now being called the "broadband" space. Perhaps the most egregious example I have seen along these lines was an article in IPTelephony in early March that addressed the desirability of "metering" VoIP by the minute! The author created a long list of the benefits of such a system. I emailed the author to suggest that the beneficiaries seemed to include everyone involved except the customer........
Your points about the difference in service levels provided by the DLECs as opposed to the ILECs and MSOs are well taken.
BLSs PON experiment seems like one of the best possible solutions we have to work with at present. My sister in San Diego has just moved into a new subdivision and they have PacBell FTTC and a question mark beyond that. Well actually, your usual utp and co-ax, for now. Hopefully, BLS will sort out the kinks so sis can go BB early in the next millenium. I look forward hearing from any threaders in the Atlanta area who can keep us posted on the success of this system.
