Dale, it mostly depends on the funds prospectus. The Prudent Bear fund uses options and shorts stocks, but most of the funds (to the best of my knowledge) don't allow these devices.

BTW, remember I said 'totally' fair. There is definitely some room for criticism of their performance. But you've got to admit that a lot of investors would be better served by going with mutuals. Those that go long stuff like VLNC, CCSI, XSNI, etc. Of course they'd be best served by index funds. If those folks tried to choose a manager, they'd probably pick a loser. <g>
