Those looking for safety in U.S. Treasuries be prepared for some rocky times ahead:

My understanding is that the Japanese, as a group, are the biggest holders of U.S. Treasuries. Apparently Japanese hedge funds are holding (and selling as rumored?) U.S. Treasuries. If the Japanese (hedge funds, banks, investment houses, insurance cos.?) have to unwind their positions for reasons stated in this article (yen carry trades) as well as others yet to be considered (depositor redemptions?) this could get more bloody before it becomes "safe."

"Smart" money has to figure out where the "smart" place is first.
