Duncan,

You are seriously confused. ZIP is not meant to be a large capacity storage device. That is what JAZ if for. As far as CD technology it is soooooo sloooow. JAZ is faster than all but the fastest hard drives. It also holds more than any current CD device and a 5 GIG version is currently in the works.

You must not have read very many prospectuses in your time. They always give worst case scenarios to protect themselves against law suits. If you read the disclaimers in ANY prospectus and take them literally, you would never invest in any company. Your interpretation of IOMG's prospectus is amateurish at best and intentionally misleading at worse.

As far as your horse and buggy comparison is concerned a more appropriate comparison would be 3.5" 1.44 Meg disks as the horse and buggy and the ZIP as the automobile. People have waited many many years for a leap frog in technology for floppies. It was the last part of the computer to undergo a major transformation. Thanks to Iomega it has now come up to speed with other PC advances. It's like a super floppy but more versatile (larger capacity, faster, and optionally portable).

I would not be so bold as to claim that "Optical will NEVER compete seriously with magnetic data storage." but keep in mind that magnetic tehnology will not stand still. Optical may one day compete, but right now your enthusiasm for optical technology is pure hype. ZIP and JAZ are real and are available right now. Optical products to compete with ZIP and JAZ don't exist and are nothing but hype. Who's hyping who??
