The precipitous drop was in the late 60s if I read the chart correctly - before the US closed the gold window. There was a short buying spree in the late 70s. I think you have to interpret this graph with other factors too - increasing faith in hard currency reserves for one thing. Too early to say - but we seem to be at the beginning of an upward swing at the moment -the B of E sales will be taken up by CBs among others - so it could result in a 'CB wash' when all the numbers are in. We have biased financial media - which focuses on sales only - forgetting that for every buyer there is a seller. Even now CBs (Taiwan?) may be heavy buyers - buy low, etc.
