Kap & Othe CPU biz enthusiasts,

I have a question about a hypothetical situation and would like to get your feedback.

Assume AMD produces only 2M K6s next Q; Assume the remaining wafer starts yield about 1.5M K7s. Can the market absorb this many high priced (ASP greater than or equal PIII 550) CPUs? What would the impact of such a roll out be? My research shows that only about 0.5-1.0 Mu of PIII-550s will be sold this Q giving some idea about the demand at the the highest price point.

What would aggressive ramp of K7 mean? Would this shrink the K7 and PIII ASPs a little bit or a lot? Will the ASPs for high end chips be in a free fall just like what happened to the low-end segment in the last couple of quarters?

If Compaq and other players target K7 toward business and consumer markets then I do not particularly see an absorption problem at the high-end but if they are slow to move to the business market (which I doubt) and focus K7 on just the consumer market there could some interesting times ahead.

Since the answer would depend a lot on if the business market is targetted or not, could you please state your assumptions?

Thanks,
Chuck

P.S.: Does anyone have any data on unit volumes (% or Mu) versus speed grades in any of the recent quarters or years?
