"Price War Drives Down PC Prices in China"

Doesn't look like Dell's kind of market.

June 10, 1999 (BEIJING) -- The price war among Chinese manufacturers over the past several months has lowered the prices of personal computers in the country.

The price of the latest model of computer with a Pentium III processor, for example, has dropped to less than RMB10,000 (US$1,200), as Chinese manufacturers compete with each other for a larger market share.

However, the Chinese are still indifferent to computer sales, and many are waiting for a further drop in prices this year, according to Xu Shijun of the Taiji Computer Co.

Xu noted that one of the most important causes of the price war was the Pentium III's price drop by 30 percent in the past two months.

In addition, computer prices are still too high for the average Chinese family, despite their growing interest in computers.
