I don't believe that there are posses of altruistic posters roaming the message boards trying to protect investors from over-hyped/ fraudulent companies. However, I do believe there are posters on message boards who short a stock and then begin their attack on the company, claiming to protect investors when the truth is they are profiting by shorting the stock they are attacking. Other motives are discussed in that article. Whether they are true, remains to be seen. I believe the days of bashing/slandering companies on message boards are coming to an end. Now that the SEC realizes the effect of message board posting on stocks, that branch of the government is beefing up its force to prevent ruining reputable companies in addition to fraudulently inflating a company's stock.
