Comverse Network Systems To Supply Enhanced Messaging Systems For ICO Global Communications

June 14, 1999 08:08 AM
WOODBURY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--Comverse's Systems To Enable Enhanced Messaging Services For ICO's Mobile Subscribers Worldwide

Comverse Network Systems, a division of Comverse Technology, Inc. (CMVT), and the world's leading supplier of enhanced services platforms to wireless and wireline network operators, today announced that it will supply enhanced messaging systems for ICO Global Communications (ICOGF), a provider of global satellite-based mobile personal communications services, to enable enhanced messaging services throughout the world.

Comverse will provide its enhanced services platforms, which enable advanced messaging services, including voice mail, fax mail, short text message service, and unified messaging (voice, fax, and e-mail in a single mailbox). Systems will be deployed in three locations around the world.

The contract was won through Comverse's distribution agreement with L.M. Ericsson (ERICY).

ICO is actively building out its satellite-based system to provide global coverage and to interconnect with existing cellular and fixed telecommunications networks. Beginning in the year 2000, ICO plans to offer a suite of services, including messaging services, to international and domestic users who roam outside areas covered by compatible cellular networks, as well as residents of rural and remote areas lacking adequate local communications.

ICO's services will be based on a new generation of pocket-size mobile phones, which will allow users to make and receive calls at any time, anywhere in the world. ICO's customers will have access to handsets that will be either satellite or dual mode, capable of working with satellite, cellular and PCS systems. Using their handsets, customers will be able to connect to any public network, anywhere in the world. If no cellular network is available, the handset could "roam" to ICO's satellite network to offer customers unrestricted mobility and accessibility for their communication needs.

Gary Titzer, Vice President of ICO's ICONET, said, "ICO's infrastructure is being procured from a team of world-class technical partners. Comverse will help us to bring advanced services, such as unified messaging, to the world."

Kobi Alexander, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Comverse Technology, said, "ICO represents yet another step toward true mass global mobile communications. Subscribers will be able to manage their communications and access their messages regardless of where they are in the world, at any time."
