LSI Logic Licenses ARM9E for Optimized DSP Solutions

MILPITAS, Calif., and CAMBRIDGE, England, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- ARM (London:
ARM; Nasdaq: ARMHY) and LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced that LSI
Logic has licensed the ARM9E(TM) processor core from ARM. The ARM9E core combines
both control and digital signal processing (DSP) capabilities in a single processor architecture,
providing an optimized processing solution for many applications. LSI Logic is already
engaging with key customers on ARM9E core-based designs and is targeting the solution at
mass storage, digital cellular and voice over IP telephony markets.

"LSI Logic is excited about the ARM9E core because it seamlessly extends our ARM(R)
performance roadmap, and is a significant addition to our library of synthesized CoreWare(R)
macrocells," said Bob Van Steenburgh, director of Processor Core Marketing, LSI Logic.
"The enhanced signal processing capabilities of this new architecture enable us to target an
even wider range of high-volume applications while maintaining low power consumption,
high performance and small die size."

"This extension to the LSI/ARM partnership highlights LSI Logic's commitment to the ARM
architecture," said Reynette Au, vice president of Marketing, ARM. "Our partnership model
has enabled the ARM7TDMI(TM) core to become a de facto standard in wireless applications;
the ARM9E core has the potential to do the same in applications where a mix of control and
DSP capability is required. With this announcement, ARM and LSI Logic will continue to
build the architecture's momentum, driving ARM core-based designs to the same level of
acceptance in a variety of key market segments where an optimal balance of size, power
consumption, performance and productivity support is needed."

Introduced in May 1999, the ARM9E single-processor solution includes enhanced signal
processing capabilities, enabling reduced system cost, chip complexity and power
consumption, with faster time-to-market. The core is an excellent high-level language target,
increasing programmer productivity and lowering software development costs. With the
ARM9E core, designers use a single integrated software development and debug environment
for DSP and microcontroller software. The single processor solution also eliminates the need
for interprocessor communications and synchronization structures, and removes duplication in
many areas including memory system components, buses and on-chip trace and debug
resources.

The ARM9E core is backward compatible with the ARM7(TM) Thumb(R) family, the
ARM9(TM) Thumb family, the StrongARM(R) family and the ARM10(TM) Thumb family,
giving designers software-compatible processors with a range of price/performance points up
to 400 MIPS. The new core is supported by ARM's development tools, its Real Time debug
solution, and the Multi-ICE(TM) debug interface. The complete ARM9E solution includes the
AMBA(TM) on-chip bus, peripheral IP, development tools, applications software, EDA tools,
ARM training and support and design services. About LSI Logic Corporation
