Dell Unveils Smallest Form Factor forOptiplex Desktops; Single Systemboard Across Four Chassis EasesDeployment, Expands Choices

June 14, 1999 09:01 AM
ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--Dell Computer Corporation DELL , the world's leading direct computer systems company, today expanded its OptiPlex(R) desktop PC line with its smallest form factor desktop that is 44 percent smaller than the current OptiPlex L low-profile PC.

Available initially with OptiPlex GX1 systems, the new OptiFrame(R) S chassis offers the same performance capabilities as other OptiPlex configurations in a compact design for space-constrained environments, such as reservation and call centers, hospitals and financial centers.

Since the small form factor GX1 uses the same systemboard as the other OptiPlex desktop and mini-tower configurations, customers can qualify a single systemboard across their choice of configurations. Dell plans to include the OptiFrame S chassis on future OptiPlex platforms.

"We've packed all of the performance and ease-of-use features of the award-winning OptiPlex line into one of the smallest desktop footprints available," said Carl Stolle, vice president and general manager, OptiPlex line of business.

"Customers appreciate the fact that they don't need dedicated resources to validate and qualify systems but instead can immediately deploy this chassis into environments that already support other GX1 systems."

Small Size, Big Performance, Easy to Service

Despite its diminutive size of 3.6 inches high, 12.5 inches wide and 14.9 inches deep, the small form factor OptiPlex GX1 does not compromise performance. It features Intel(R) Pentium(R) III and Pentium II processors, up to 768MB SDRAM, hard drives up to 20GB(a), integrated 3Com networking, 2X AGP video with up to 8 MB video memory and audio.

The new OptiFrame S chassis offers tool-less access and serviceability, including push-button cover access, lever-actuated card cage, and 100 percent recyclable materials. Hard drive and other storage peripherals can be removed easily from the system without tools. For added manageability and security, the OptiFrame S chassis is also available in sealed configurations without removable storage capabilities.

Dell's award-winning OptiPlex PCs deliver outstanding performance and manageability in a dependable network-ready design to business and institutional customers who want maximum productivity, serviceability and lasting value on their desktops. OptiPlex PCs are an ideal platform for customers wanting systems optimized to run Microsoft's Windows NT(R) Workstation and are designed to support the Windows 2000 operating system.

Current OptiPlex systems carry the NSTL Hardware Tested Year 2000 Compliant logo and integrate many of the latest industry-standard technologies as part of Dell's OpenManage(tm) systems management strategy to help customers manage their network operating expenses.
