Company Press Release
Harmonic and OpenTV to Provide First Interactive Wireless Cable TV in Canada
TRANsend Digital Headend Integrated with OpenTV's Interactive Services Platform
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--Today at Cable '99 Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT - news) announced that it has implemented interoperability of its TRANsend digital headend with OpenTV's interactive television server system.

This system is to be installed at IMAGE Wireless Communications of Yorkton, Canada, a Multipoint Multichannel Distribution System (MMDS) provider, and already a customer of Harmonic, having upgraded its headend to digital with TRANsend in April 1999.

This installation sees the first pairing of Harmonic's TRANsend with OpenTV's OpenStreamer headend solution software that will deliver an interactive television service to IMAGE subscribers in the province of Saskatchewan. As well as being a first for Harmonic, this initial installation is the first interactive OpenTV wireless cable network to be deployed in Canada.

Harmonic has been working with IMAGE to ensure compatibility with its existing system. This included the integration of the OpenTV-enabled TRANsend modules with Nagra Vision's conditional access system, as well as providing support for set-top boxes from Sagem. At the time of the initial upgrade to digital, IMAGE specified TRANsend because of its exceptional flexibility and its open architecture that allows the company to maintain its investment in legacy equipment.

Capella Telecommunications, Harmonic's Canadian distributor, provides key technical support and training to IMAGE as it deploys TRANsend and Sagem set-top boxes.

''We chose TRANsend when we carried out the expansion of our digital MMDS system because this solution offered us the interoperability, flexibility and scalability to allow further expansion,'' commented Kim South, Vice President and CEO of IMAGE Wireless Communications. ''The ease with which we have been able to complete the next stage, with the addition of interactive services, bears this out.''

The IMAGE system is configured to receive MPEG-2 streams from OpenTV's OpenStreamer server into a TRANsend IRX 8000 MPEG-2 receiver, which is designed to receive multiple MPEG-2 streams, individual or multiplexed, from a variety of sources. These are then multiplexed for transmission over the broadband network using Harmonic's TRANsend QAM modulator. In the IMAGE deployment the signals are fed to a TRANsend EMX 8000 encryptor multiplexer module which allows the operator to scramble the multiplexed stream for delivering customized programming.
This company is fantastic,it it more than I ever dreamed it was.
Management is the key,and product engineering.
