The United Nations Selects Brio Technology as Its Global Standard For Business Intelligence

United Nations Development Programme to Deploy Brio Enterprise to Country Offices Worldwide

June 14, 1999 08:50 AM
PALO ALTO, Calif., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Brio Technology, Inc. BRYO today announced that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has chosen the Brio Enterprise web-based business intelligence products for deployment on a worldwide basis to offices in 135 countries. The UNDP is the largest organization within the UN system, which is comprised of a consortium of 15 independent, non-profit organizations. The UNDP has oversight responsibility for the full range of activities that help developing countries, including management of development projects and humanitarian assistance.
"We're extremely pleased that the Brio Enterprise suite of products continues to be chosen as the standard for premier organizations like the United Nations Development Programme," said Yorgen Edholm, CEO and president of Brio Technology, Inc. "UNDP is a prime example of true enterprise business intelligence deployment by an organization strongly committed to providing its users with the information and analysis that will improve their operations and decision-making capabilities."

Brio Enterprise will provide business intelligence functions such as ad hoc query, analysis and reporting on essential UNDP systems, including an integrated financial management system, human resources and the UNDP project management system. With over 6,000 projects ongoing world wide -- covering all areas of socio-economic development and delivering close to $2 billion of assistance last year -- the UNDP's project management system is critically important in helping the UNDP fulfill its global mission. With access to sensitive budget, expenditure, personnel and project logistical information, United Nations end users will use Brio Enterprise to empower themselves with data, allowing the UNDP to become more of a learning organization that most effectively leverages its own information.

Recognizing a strong need to provide a greater quantity and quality of information to UNDP executives and business users, Eddie Chen, IT Manager at UNDP, and his data warehousing team began the search for the business intelligence suite that would best meet UNDP's exacting criteria. Starting with product recommendations from The Gartner Group, UNDP formed a team of technical and nontechnical users to assess the competing products. After an intense six-week evaluation, UNDP selected Brio Enterprise based on criteria that included quality of web-enabled products, an architecture that supports true enterprisewide deployment, reporting and OLAP capabilities, integrated user interface, as well as price and performance. "Brio just stood out," noted Chen. "Brio had the best web module for allowing us to increase the flow of information between our field offices worldwide and headquarters. Brio also had the most friendly user interface for both reporting and OLAP analysis."

"Choosing Brio has helped my IT group build the kind of excellent reputation that bridges the gap between IT and end users," said Fikret Akcura, CIO for UNDP. "We designed a highly functional data warehouse and are enabling our users with Brio Enterprise; suddenly, the distance between the user and the information has become so short that our users can do huge amounts of analysis on their own. The impact on the way our business users view the information system and the information is tremendous."

"We're a worldwide organization with offices in nearly every country on earth, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe," continued Eddie Chen. "In some countries, the only way to connect to the Internet is via satellite -- but it is fundamentally changing our flow of information. Our country offices now have efficient communications with headquarters accounting systems, management systems, information systems and more. We're also using Brio for analytical reporting -- sending standard reports to our headquarters users and country offices through Brio.Insight or the Broadcast Server, Netscape, or email."
