....Dell's market share in Britain jumped to 17.9 percent in the first quarter this year from 14.9 percent a year earlier, according to research from International Data Corp. Compaq grew more slowly, increasing its market share to 20.7 from 19.8 percent.
With 9.8 percent of Europe's PC sales, Dell edged past IBM as the No. 2 PC vendor in the first quarter.
But it is a distant second to Compaq's 18.5 percent market share for all of Europe, according to IDC estimates.
"The company has reached the top five in the U.K., France, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Spain, but has been less successful in Italy, Germany, Austria, Greece, Portugal," said Roger Kay of IDC.....
