WorldGate in Web TV deal on Comcast cable system

BENSALEM, Pa., June 14 (Reuters) - WorldGate Communications
Inc. <WGAT.O>, on Monday said the company agreed to a deal with
a Comcast Corp. <CMCSA.O> unit to install its combined
Internet-television service on Comcast's Philadelphia area
cable system.
The introduction of the new WorldGate service is scheduled
to begin this fall. The service will initially include Internet
access, e-mail, extensive localized content and a method of
interlinking Web content with specific television channels.
In contrast to other Web TV suppliers, the WorldGate
service uses both existing analog or newer digital cable
television converter equipment. In this case, WorldGate relies
on General Instrument Corp.'s <GIC.N> digital set-top box.
"We have been pleased with our testing of the WorldGate
Service, and we believe it can add value for our cable
customers," said Steve Heeb, director of new business
development at the Comcast Cable Communications unit.
"This represents one of our first offerings of interactive
TV services, and we will be following the results closely," he
said.
WorldGate's headquarters are located near Philadelphia in
Bensalem.
