Echelon's LONWORKS Networks Extend Reach of Jini Technology at JavaOne Conference
--Demonstration Shows How the LONWORKS System Enables Jini Technology to Reach Millions of Devices--
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999-- Echelon Corporation (Nasdaq:ELON - news) announced today that Sun is showing a demonstration at JavaOne of how LONWORKS® enabled consumer and other devices can participate as services on a Jini(tm) network.

The demonstration at Sun's JavaOne Developer's Conference highlights how connectivity to Echelon's internationally recognized LONWORKS device networking standard and Sun's Jini technology can deliver the next wave of highly distributed, service-based networking. LONWORKS networks are currently used in homes, buildings, factories, utilities, trains, airplanes and other applications to inexpensively extend automated, intelligent control down to the most elemental functional levels of a system.

In the demonstration at JavaOne, a LONWORKS network containing light switch and load controller devices from Leviton Manufacturing and a multifunction temperature, occupancy and ambient light level sensor from Hubbell Wiring Devices interact via a LONWORKS proxy for Jini with a Jini enabled camera, printer and disk drive. The LONWORKS proxy for Jini, based on Echelon's LNS(tm) network operating system, leverages the automatic discovery and self-documentation features of LONWORKS devices to detect and register each device's functionality as Jini services. No additional hardware or software in the devices themselves or any device-specific drivers in the proxy is required. The end result is delivery of the Jini vision of simple, ''plug and work'' networking for consumer and other control devices.

''Connectivity to Echelon's LONWORKS system provides the means for Jini technology to extend to millions of control devices worldwide,'' said Mike Clary, General Manager and VP, Consumer and Embedded Sun Microsystems Inc. ''These devices include everything from heating and air-conditioning systems to kitchen appliances -- providing services over the net.''

''By combining LONWORKS networks and Jini technology, any LONWORKS device can become a provider of Jini services,'' said Ken Oshman, president and CEO of Echelon Corporation. ''Like Sun, we envision a world where anyone will be able to plug-and-participate anytime, from anywhere, using services from any device.''

All of the LONWORKS devices in the demonstration are designed to the LONMARK® interoperability guidelines and bear the LONMARK logo, a mark that signifies products designed for easy integration in open multivendor control networks.
