THREAD ---Lucent Technologies Inc. Dow Jones Newswires -- June 14, 1999 DJ Lucent In Talks To Buy 2 Brazil Telecom Companies -Folha SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) is negotiating the acquisition of two small telecommunications equipment companies in Brazil, the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported Sunday. The negotiation with the companies, Batik and Zetax, is advanced, the report said. A spokeswoman for Lucent said the rumor has been in circulation for weeks, but declined to confirm or deny it. According to Folha, Lucent is interested in acquiring Zetax and Batik because of an increasingly protectionist Brazilian government which may demand that telecommunications companies use a greater percentage of equipment produced in Brazil. Lucent already produces equipment in Brazil, according to the Lucent spokeswoman. BEST WISHES BILL
