All,

News release on Compaq--doesn't look like CPQ would ink a deal with AMD any time soon.

Compaq sees global PC market growing by 20% in '97

TOKYO, March 18 (Reuter) - The global market for personal computers should grow by 20 percent in 1997, Compaq Computer Corp chief executive officer Eckhard Pfeiffer told a news conference in Tokyo on
Tuesday.

"There is significant upgrading of PC products going on in the industry, helped by the introduction of Intel Corp new advanced MMX chip," Pfeiffer said.

Asked about a reported slowdown in demand for PCs in the U.S. market, Pfeiffer said, "the first-quarter result does not necessarily reflect the trend for the year."

He added that first-quarter sales in 1996 were relatively slow but it turned out to be a good overall year.

"This year will not be fundamentally different than last year," he said.

Pfeiffer would not discuss prospects for the U.S. market this year, but said Compaq's first-quarter shipments "were just as we had anticipated."

MMX is Intel's multimedia enhancement technology.
