"Money is a commodity, backed by a government."

IMO, that statement is an oxymoron. If backed by a government (GDP, credit, trade balance, taxation etc.) then money is a derivative. It is of course still subject to the laws of supply/demand.
AU, although subject to supply/demand, is not a derivative. It has inherent value on to itself whatever that value maybe. When I think of the value of AU, I think of it staying still and derivative currencies moving...not visa versa.
