MUNICH, Germany -- Compaq Computer Corp. said Thursday it was unlikely to lighten its dependence on Intel Corp. for computer chips, even though a former Compaq partner plans to release alternative chips this year.
Compaq, the world's largest maker of personal computers, expected to remain a close ally of Intel for up to 10 years or more, and was helping Intel develop a new generation of chips due by the end of the decade, Chief Executive Officer Eckhard Pfeiffer said.
He also said Compaq was hesitant to use the K6 chip due later this year from Advanced Micro Devices Inc, a former supplier of 486 chips for Compaq.
``We placed a big bet a time ago on an alternative chip and it didn' work out,'' Pfeiffer said in an interview after a news conference. ``We shipped some 486s but nothing came after it.''
AMD has said the K6 would be cheaper and faster than Intel's fastest chip, the Pentium Pro.
Two years ago Compaq had planned to move from AMD 486s to the K5 -- AMD's answer to Intel's top-selling Penitum chip. But a one-year manufacturing hitch kept the K5 from hitting the market on time. __________
