All...Microsoft's NetPC gets slammed!

infoworld.com

A quote from the article:

"The tables have finally turned. As long as Microsoft owned the desktop, no other company could compete on a level playing field. Consequently, Microsoft created products and strategies to crush competition, not to serve the customer. The customer has always been secondary. Witness the fact that it only owned up to the expense of managing Windows PCs when the NC threatened to kick the PC's butt."

Borrowed from the Corel thread..

And some of my thoughts on corel thread.. it may be bad i'm tired....

That article confirms that Java will be big. I am getting excited about Corel. I have been using MS office programs at work for several years. I recently bought a Quantex computer and it came with Corel software...

Two points.... First I payed ~3000.00 for Pentium Pro... So far what have I used my system for????? AOL.. Email.. Basic word processing/spread sheets...surfing.. simple graphics editing... I can see a big market for a machine that can do those things reasonably fast and cheaper that $3000....(network device and java????)....Second I LIKE the COREL products very much and I thought I would HAVE to have the MS Office stuff... This has opened my eyes even wider to the Microslop that is being forced down our and some corporations throats...

But....Corps will face the facts when it comes to TCO and the NC will be big.

Also with Corel pumping these programs out at big discount to MS eventually new companies (and hopefully some existing) will return to using WordPerfect and its suite. And...I think eventually (and this is out there) that we will store all of our data on servers... To me this is the future....IMHO there will be big companies like banks that safeguard your data...you will pay them to do it... they will keep it safe, and from prying eyes...and all of the programs one likes to use WILL be piped in to our NCs.....with bandwidth and speed of data transfer(which is not in all that distant future)this will happen (again IMHO).

I would if I was guaranteed privacy, store my data on a remote computer. What are the benefits? Less upgrading.... In my mind hard drives, cd roms, etc. will at some point be a thing of the past. When one thinks about it, does it really make sense that we all have to have a copy of the latest xxxxx software. Especially when we typically
use just a small portion of the program daily or maybe don't even use the program for weeks???????

Again some of this is out there, but it may happen. One reason I sold all of my Iomega stock (at a big profit) was that I though the technology may become obsolete at some point (how many people need to transfer files on compatible disks in the future?? One can mail attachments and soon BIG files/programs will be transferred over the
network)

I'm kinda babbling, sometimes happens....

One more thing..."The network is the computer!"
