rost & Sullivan: Wireless Voice Services, Are Subscribers Ready to Cut The Cord?
Jump to first matched term
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Wireless voice services have expanded dramatically since their introduction in the early 1980s. Wireless voice services allow people to easily make and receive calls from transient locations. Forecasts for the future of wireless include decreasing prices and technological advancement. The market is moving fast and can he extremely lucrative for companies that stay abreast of important market trends.
According to new strategic research from Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.com), North American Wireless Voice Service Markets, revenues for the total market for 1998 were approximately $45 billion. The market is projected to grow rapidly throughout the forecast period. For the purposes of this research the market has been segmented into the following: Analog cellular voice services, digital cellular voice services and personal communications services (PCS).
Analog accounted for more than half of the revenues of the market in 1998. However, as more and more users migrate to higher sound quality and improved communications services of the digital segment of the market, analog services are expected to steadily decline.
"As digital and cellular personal communications services (PCS) handsets become more popular with residential and business customers alike, analog carriers are trying to figure out ways to enhance the value of the original cellular technology," says Frost & Sullivan Telecommunications Industry Analyst Kim Antonnacio.
There were over 80 companies competing in the North American wireless voice services industry in 1998. The first tier of competition was concentrated among the RBOCs, ILECs, IXCs and wireless service providers, while the second tier of competition remains highly fragmented.
"Minimal brand name awareness of smaller carriers limits their ability to compete against market leaders and increase their market visibility," says Frost & Sullivan Telecommunications Industry Analyst Rajeev Sinha. "Customers are looking for names they can trust, pricing plans they can easily understand and extensive geographical coverage. Companies that meet these needs will find themselves better able to navigate the market in the future."
Many of the larger carriers have started to acquire their competitors. For example, AT&T Wireless acquired Vanguard Cellular in October of 1998. Currently, the market leaders are AT&T Wireless, Sprint PCS, Bell Atlantic Mobile, AirTouch Communications, Southwestern Bell Wireless and BellSouth Cellular, and GTE Wireless.
Frost & Sullivan presents Market Engineering Awards to the North American wireless voice services industry to recognize companies that have worked hard to make a positive contribution to the North American wireless voice services market.
The 1998 Market Engineering Customer Focus Award was presented to Bell Atlantic for the company's ability to meet and exceed customer expectations. Through strong marketing activities and focus on customer service, Bell Atlantic Mobile has managed to serve over 5.5 million customers throughout 111,000 square miles of coverage from Maine to Georgia, thereby becoming the largest wireless service provider on the East Coast.
The technologies reviewed in this research include code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), global system for mobile communications (GSM), analog cellular, digital cellular, and personal communications services (PCS).
