SAN JOSE--KLA-Tencor Corp. here today announced a series of top management changes with its chairman, Jon D. Tompkins, retiring and CEO Kenneth Levy taking the chairman position again. KLA-Tencor's CEO position will be filled by Ken Schroeder, the company's president and chief operating officer.
Last June, Tompkins and Levy swapped the positions of CEO and chairman (see June 4, 1998, story). Tompkins was chairman, president and CEO of Tencor Instruments Inc. before it merged with KLA Instruments Inc. in 1997, creating a giant supplier of metrology and inspection equipment with annual sales exceeding $1 billion (see May 1, 1997, story). Levy was KLA's chairman and CEO prior to the merger.
"As we continue to grow and expand in sync with our customers' changing needs, we are evolving our organization and developing the leaders of the future," Levy said. "Ken Schroeder, who has spent the past several years working closely with me in preparation for this transition, is ideally suited to drive our strategic expansion as we prepare to take our company and industry to the next level."
Tompkins will remain on the KLA-Tencor board.
Schroeder joined KLA in 1979 as vice president of operations. He departed the company in 1987 and then returned to KLA in 1991 as president and COO.
