Motorola, Lucent in IP telephony deal

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (CBS.MW) -- Motorola's Multimedia Group and Lucent Technologies said the companies are in a pact to offer high-speed cable modem technology to cable operators.
Motorola's cable modem technology will combine with Lucent's Internet Protocol telephony networking equipment to provide a single option.
"Working together, we can enable cable operators to offer their subscribers carrier-class telephony, high-speed Internet access and video service, featuring high-reliability and consolidated billing," Bob Molnar, vice president, Motorola, Inc., said in a statement.
System trials are to begin next month, the companies said.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In related news, Motorola (MOT: news, msgs) Multimedia Group said Monday that June marks its shipment of 1 million cable subscriber devices. These include cable modems and circuit switched cable telephony units. See press release.
