Dee Jay,

>>Look, only an idiot would expect a company spokesperson to answer those questions and your friend is no idiot, so one would then suspect that he was grandstanding, i.e. trying to one-up the Ascend person or show how technically proficient he is (as with the number of pins) or whatever.<<

The only "idiots" out there are those people that actually believe any press release or official statement. This includes USRX press releases. Even so, USRX has come closer to actually living up to its press releases than any of the "empire" (i.e. consortium) members. Most press releases contain bold predictions combined with enough ambiguity to provide plausible denial. ASND didn't even provide plausible denial when they stated they would be shipping 56k equipment in January. Your distinction between server and desktop is irrelevant.

>>The point is he was trying to get a rise out of the Ascend spokesperson or to get into a debate or whatever. Given the likelihood of any sort of response that was pointless in the extreme and I said as much. <<

The only "pointless" response is to accept the Ascend spokesperson's statement without question. Surely you can't be so naive. As for why the ASND guy showed up here in the first place, I suspect it might have something to do with the e-mail from an ASND employee that was posted in the following message:

techstocks.com

Assuming this message is real then it directly contradicts ASND's official position regarding shipping dates. The poor soul who sent the e-mail was probably not in a position to know ASND's official position and based his opinion on technical information. I'm sure he is in hot water now.

I for one appreciate David's (and others') questions of the ASND spokesperson. His statement is inconsistent with publicly available information and/or speculation. The fact that ASND hasn't responded to the questions could very well mean they don't have substantive answers. If the spokesperson was somehow above answering questions then he shouldn't have shown up here in the first place.
