Mary, RE: If Stansky (sp), Vinnick, and other fundy types explained to us their investment rationale, I bet we would be amazed by the hubris that passes for Wall Street wisdom. Stansky I'd agree with, but Jeff Vinik is one of the best investors around. Magellan was a poor platform for his ability--Fidelity's fault, not Jeff's. His ability to grow a very large ($1 b+) pool of money over the past 3 years is unsurpassed, and although luck certainly could be a factor (and probably is), in his case ability is also a significant factor. Not that there isn't a lot of hubris flowing around Vinik Asset Management also, but that's another story.
