FCC Mulls Appeal Over Cable Internet Access, Wash. Post Says

Bloomberg News
June 15, 1999, 4:46 a.m. PT

Washington, June 15 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Federal
Communications Commission might join AT&T Corp. in appealing the
decision by a Portland, Oregon, federal judge that local
governments can force cable companies to open their lines to
multiple Internet service providers, the Washington Post
reported. FCC Chairman William Kennard will argue in a speech for
delivery today in Chicago that only the FCC should decide when
cable companies must open their lines, although he will urge the
cable industry to ''act responsibly'' and provide access, the
Post said. The FCC says there is no evidence so far that cable
Internet service providers have restrained competition, the Post
said.

GTE Corp. said yesterday a test of its cable system in
Clearwater, Florida, showed cable operators can easily and
cheaply provide access to their networks for multiple Internet
service providers.
