Vari-L Company Chairman/Chief Scientific Officer Wins American Electronics Association Technology Award

DENVER, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Vari-L Company, Inc. (Nasdaq: VARL - news), a leading provider of advanced components for the wireless telecommunications industry, today announced its Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer Joseph H. Kiser has been awarded the 1999 Significant Technical Achievement Award by the American Electronics Association (AEA) Mountain States Council. The distinction was announced at the Mountain States Council's seventh Annual Awards Banquet held June 3 in Denver.

The award recognizes Kiser's important contributions toward the development of breakthrough technologies that earned Vari-L three United States patents in 1998. Two of the patents cover technology enabling lower-cost, automated production of high-frequency wireless components previously manufactured in an expensive, labor-intensive environment. The third patent is for an improved transformer circuit design that enhances the performance of a wide variety of wireless and fiberoptic applications.

Dave Sherman, President and CEO, said, ''Joe Kiser's innovations have positioned Vari-L for continued strong growth by giving the Company the technical base to become a leader in emerging wireless markets. While his efforts have been an invaluable element of Vari-L's success over the years, we agree with the AEA that his accomplishments were particularly noteworthy in 1998 and are pleased they have chosen to acknowledge his skill and proficiency.

''New technology is essential to Vari-L's ongoing success in the highly competitive, rapidly evolving communications industry. Mr. Kiser leads a talented team of engineers who constantly strive to obsolete the Company's own technology. Their efforts have played an important part in keeping Vari-L at the forefront of innovation. Mr. Kiser feels this award belongs to each one of them as much as it belongs to him.''

The AEA Significant Technical Achievement Award is presented to a firm or individual that in the last 12 months has produced a recognized technical breakthrough or unique application of a technology to a product or service area.

Through its headquarters in Denver, Vari-L designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of radio and microwave frequency signal source and processing components used in the wireless telecommunications industry for both commercial and military applications. Vari-L serves a diverse customer base comprised of some of the world's leading technology companies, including California Microwave, Ericsson, Harris, Hughes, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Lucent Technologies, Mitsubishi, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Samsung, Siemens, Stanford Telecom and Wireless Access.
