Perhaps just a master of understatement. It was unpleasant, after all. It was all more complex and seeded in the beginnings of our nation than most folks admit, though. To say it was all about slavery doesn't explain all the people in the south that suffered and went to war that didn't own, nor would own, slaves. There were lots of them. Even then there were more poor farmers in the south than there were rich plantation and slave owners. Edit: I'm glad the North won.
