eReady(tm) Program to enable ISVs and system integrators to assess infrastructure options for cost-effective, Web-based delivery of business applications
Sequent Computer Systems, Inc. today announced the eReady(tm) Program, an aggressive initiative to partner with select independent software vendors (ISVs) to enable their delivery of applications to small and mid-sized businesses over the Internet. Sequent is already working with several ISVs to develop Web-hosted solutions, including Clarus Corp. and Pivotal Software, Inc. The program includes the eReady Lab, a Web-hosted application center where key software vendors and system integrators can work with Sequent to design and test web hosted application delivery solutions in a real-world environment. Sequent will provide a range of data center infrastructure services and facilities under both fee-based and revenue sharing models. Sequent is teaming with Microsoft, EMC, Cisco Systems and other key infrastructure partners to support the testing environment. "The Web delivery model provides an unequaled opportunity for ISVs to grow market share rapidly across the dynamic small and mid-sized business markets," said Jeff Pancottine, vice president of global marketing for Sequent. "Sequent brings proven expertise designing and managing large-scale environments for performance, cost and availability. We are committed to helping our software vendor and system integrator partners get to market quickly with Web-based services that will help them achieve significant top-line growth." For many ISVs and systems integrators, web hosted application delivery offers a low cost channel capable of generating many thousands of new users and millions in top line revenue. The Web channel also presents challenges demanding new competencies and infrastructure requirements. Sequent's eReady Program allows these organizations to model and test the infrastructure requirements for the mass provisioning of their application and assess the business cases for different approaches to deployment -- including in-house hosting and various outsourcing options.
Windows NT(R)-based Application Delivery
The majority of new front-office applications are developed in the Microsoft Windows NT environment for its volume economics, functionality and ease-of-use. Sequent will provide a leading Web-hosted application infrastructure design and testing environment for Windows NT-based applications working closely with Microsoft and its Digital Nervous System architecture for electronic commerce. "The ability to deliver Windows-based business applications to thousands of small and middle market businesses quickly and reliably and at a low cost are key advantages for application service providers delivering front-office solutions," said David Ostroff, Hosting Programs Manager at Microsoft. "Sequent's eReady Program will enable invaluable resources in enabling many application vendors to make the right decisions and achieve time to market." "There will be great demand for applications such as electronic procurement as a subscription-based hosted service enabling companies of all sizes to realize the benefits of e-commerce," said Steve Hornyak, vice president product strategy and business development of Clarus. "Participating in Sequent's eReady Program will allow Clarus to rapidly deploy proven, scaleable e-commerce solutions in a hosted environment." "We are excited to be the first e-customer relationship management vendor to be chosen to participate in Sequent's eReady Program," said Norm Francis, president and CEO for Pivotal Software. "Sequent's proven track-record in designing and managing large-scale hosted environments, focus on the Microsoft DNA environment, and extensive benchmarking facility will help us to design a scalable, reliable and flexible eCRM solution that is optimized for thehosting environment."
Leveraging Partner Solutions
Sequent is leveraging EMC's storage solutions and Cisco's Hosted Application Initiative as part of the eReady Program for a complete end-to-end solution. "Application service providers require scalable, highly reliable and flexible enterprise storage solutions as a key component of their information infrastructures. EMC Enterprise Storage plays a central role in Sequent's eReady Lab," said Frank Farese, EMC's Vice President of Global Alliances. "The combination of Sequent's NUMACenter platform and EMC Enterprise Storage systems and software provides a mainframe-class storage solution that meets the extreme demands of business-critical web hosting." "Cisco's Hosted Application Initiative, combined with Sequent's data center servers, provides a highly scalable and flexible IT environment for hosted applications that will enable applications providers to accommodate rapid growth as application use increases," said Eugene Lee, vice president small/medium business marketing at Cisco. "This initiative gives smaller companies the ability to focus on running their businesses, not on the technology it takes to run it."
eReady Lab
Based at Sequent headquarters, the eReady Lab provides a competency center where ISVs and systems integrators can safely test and fine-tune netsourcing solutions in an actual ASP environment running Sequent's data center systems. These companies will be able to deploy and run their own netsourced applications in a real-world environment. The eReady Lab combines Sequent NUMACenter(tm) systems with key partner technologies, including Microsoft e-commerce solutions, Cisco networking technology and EMC secure storage. The eReady Lab also utilizes key resources from Sequent's Solutions Integration Group and professional services.
The NUMACenter Environment
The Sequent NUMACenter platform provides a framework for consolidation and rapid deployment of large scale Windows NT applications. NUMACenter is the industry's first system to support concurrent Windows NT application and database resources within a managed and fully integrated environment including Intel processors, middleware, databases, storage, back-up and management tools. NUMACenter combines unique Sequent technology, such as the NUMA-Q(tm) architecture, Storage Area Network capabilities and the Advanced Detection Availability Manager (ADAM), with key partner components. NUMACenter provides a framework through which an application service provider can quickly deploy applications and add new capabilities over time, protecting their infrastructure investment.
