This is significant news for VoIP as well as the "Last Mile" thread. Cornerstone has been chosen by ATT to provide circuit switched
telephony via HFC. Now Cornerstone will provide internet telephony as well.

Arris, a Nortel Networks / ANTEC Venture, Introduces A New Era of
Cornerstone Products

PR Newswire - June 15, 1999 10:26

An Integrated Carrier Grade Internet Telephony and Data Solution for HFC Operators

ATLANTA, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Arris, a Nortel Networks* (NYSE: NT)/ ANTEC (Nasdaq: ANTC) venture, and the leader in the cable telephony equipment market, today announced new members of its Cornerstone(TM) product line to deliver Internet Telephony solutions. These new members include the Packet Port(TM) and a High Capacity Carrier Grade Cable Modem Termination System. With the advent of these products, operators will be able to easily and cost- effectively deploy integrated Internet Telephony and data services for their subscribers.

"Today's announcement delivers the first truly carrier-grade solution for cable operators to deliver advanced,
primary grade Internet Protocol (IP) telephony services and high-speed Internet access over cable," said Jim Lakin, Chief Marketing Officer, Arris. "Coupled with solutions from Nortel Networks and ANTEC, these new Cornerstone products enable cable operators to provide true end-to-end packet-based multimedia solutions that include
carrier-grade telephony."

The Packet Port is the network interface device for primary line packetized voice and data and will support Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 1.1 cable modem standards. It closely resembles the Cornerstone Four-line Voice Port(TM) so that operators can easily transition their installation processes. The Packet Port is built on five generations of the Cornerstone cable telephony system Voice Port and the CableLabs(R)
Certified(TM) Cornerstone Cable Modem 100 to deliver both voice and data over IP over a hybrid-fiber/coax (HFC) network. It is an environmentally hardened unit designed for the rigors of outside plant deployment in diverse operating conditions. Its outdoor location facilitates ease of installation and servicing and its low power
consumption allows economical "lifeline" network powering. The Packet Port supports four lines of "lifeline" telephony and a high-speed (10BaseT) data interface. A remote battery monitoring option is also available which makes local powering a viable alternative for "lifeline" service. The Packet Port delivers all the enhanced telephony features (e.g. Caller ID, call waiting and transparent operation with typical residential analog modems and fax
machines) which consumers have come to expect from their local phone service.

"Arris is able to effectively leverage our field-proven Cornerstone Voice Port technology and our market-leading
expertise in cable modems to develop the Packet Port and the High Capacity Carrier Grade Cable Modem Termination System. As a result, the same high reliability of the Cornerstone system and resiliency of our cable modem products are inherent in our next generation of Cornerstone products", said Oscar Rodriguez, Chief Operating Officer, Arris. "We look forward to beginning field trials at key customer accounts with these new products later this year."

The Cornerstone Packet Port technology will debut at the NCTA show June 14-16 in Chicago by ANTEC (booth 2716) and Nortel Networks (booth 3592). They connect to the Cornerstone High Capacity Carrier Grade Cable Modem Termination System which provides Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms for tiered data services, as well as high quality voice.

The Cornerstone High Capacity Carrier Grade Cable Modem Termination System is a modular, fully redundant, carrier class system that can be provisioned for both voice and data traffic. It utilizes the intelligent frequency agility capability of the Cornerstone cable telephony system and will institute a hop to a predetermined clean channel when ingress noise threatens to degrade an upstream frequency. Additionally, the High Capacity Carrier Grade
Cable Modem Termination System incorporates redundant critical components to support in service replacement of components to minimize network downtime in order to meet system availability requirements of 99.99% and will support more than 6,400 telephony lines.

These new Cornerstone products further protect the operator's investment in Cornerstone cable telephony systems by facilitating the transition to standards-compliant end-to-end IP network components. "Nortel Networks and Arris are working closely together to develop advanced Internet Telephony solutions that will provide a seamless path for customers to transition to cost-effective, Internet Telephony solutions in the future," said Lakin.
"This means that operators who are already in service with Cornerstone cable telephony systems can gracefully
migrate their traffic from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) onto an IP backbone without replacing installed Voice Ports. And, since the HDT supports access to multiple switches or IP hosts, Cornerstone voice lines can be flexibly provisioned onto either the IP network or the PSTN."

Arris' Cornerstone systems provide robust and reliable telephony and data solutions for transmission over the cable
operator's HFC plant. The Cornerstone system consists of a Host Digital Terminal and/or a Cable Modem Termination System, located at the cable headend, connected to Voice Ports, Packet Ports, or Cable Modems, located at homes or businesses. With 20 operators deploying, or planning to deploy the Cornerstone cable telephony system in more than 40 cities, and over 350,000 Voice Ports shipped to date, Arris supplies the most widely used cable telephony system in the world. Arris has shipped the Cornerstone Cable Modem 100s and Cornerstone Cable Modem Termination System 1000s to over 40 different sites globally for detailed field evaluations and deployments. Arris is one of the leading suppliers of HFC data systems with over one-half million cablemodems shipped worldwide and over 8 million homes passed. Arris sells its products through ANTEC for large US cable operators and through Nortel Networks for other US network operators, operators, and Canadian cable companies.
