Cute, at any rate. Democracy depends upon respect for ordinary people, but not illusions about them. There are various "hedges" in democracy, to ensure that our trust in "the people" is not misplaced, such as representative government, an independent judiciary, and the separation of powers. "The people" are somewhat like the British monarch, although with enhanced powers. In normal circumstances, they reign but do not rule. However, government is ultimately accountable to them, through elections, and other avenues to seek to redress grievances. We do not license them, in groups of twelve, to override the legislature... |
