Profile(R) PDR Emerging as the Building Block of the Digital Broadcast Facility BEAVERTON, Ore., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to overwhelming customer demand, Tektronix' (NYSE: TEK) Video and Networking Division today announced a new addition to its Profile Professional Disk Recorder family. The Profile PDR200 video file server builds on the success of the industry-standard Profile PDR100, which shipped in 1995 and has an installed base of 1,800 units as well as strong support from leading software application vendors. Tektronix' newest Profile system adds high-speed networking and increased storage and bandwidth to address the needs of large broadcasters. The Profile PDR200 will ship next month, and will be shown for the first time at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 7-10. The PDR200 allows larger broadcasters to build digital, high speed, wide bandwidth, networked operations. Its ability to share digital video over a Fibre Channel network streamlines day-to-day operation and allows last second changes in commercial schedules, sports and news programs, and time-delayed programming -- resulting in a faster, more responsive operation. "This new system was added to the Profile PDR family so Tektronix could better serve all broadcasters -- large and small -- and enable them to take advantage of the new digital technology within their timeframe and budget," said Lucie J. Fjeldstad, president, Tektronix Video and Networking Division. "The Profile PDR family and its Fibre Channel networking is an important building block for any facility migrating from tape to disk." The new Profile PDR200 is a two or four channel, highly configurable, network-ready video file server with increased storage capacity, higher internal bandwidth, and digital audio. Building on the industry standard PDR100, the new Profile PDR200 features larger 9GB Ultra-SCSI disk drives, 24-bit AES/EBU digital or analog audio, 30 MB/s internal bandwidth, increased external storage and RAID data protection options, plus the ability to share digitally-compressed video over a Fibre Channel network. The modular Profile PDR200 also offers growth for future needs, including MPEG upgradability. It is also capable of being configured with a wide range of options including a mix/effects module, serial digital input/output, analog composite input/output, analog component input, as well as the Profile PLS200 data tape library system and the Profile PDX208 external eight-drive expansion chassis. The new system is based on the proven and reliable Profile PDR100 which remains the system of choice for customers using Profile PDRs in standalone applications requiring less than nine hours of native storage, such as time delay, store and forward, spot and program replay and as a cache for today's cart machines. The Profile PDR200, as well as the original PDR100, can be used with Profile Tool Box software, a common user interface allowing users to view and manage all video and audio on a Profile PDR network from a single console. Tool Box can be run remotely on a Win95 or Win NT system and can be operated from any location regardless of where the disk recorder resides. The Profile PDR200 starts at $49,000 (U.S.) and will ship April 30, 1997.
