In Japan, savings rates have risen from 11% in 1984 to over 20% at present, while in the United States, savings rates have collapsed from 8% to -0.2% over the same period. The Japanese stock market capitalization as a percentage of world stock market capitalization has declined from 47% in 1989, to just 7.5%, while over the same time the U.S. stock market capitalization as a percentage of the world has risen from 28% to 53%.
