OT OT - cable access

Ed,
Don't know if your install was as screwy as mine, but what was supposed to take less than 2 hours turned into a 5 hour affair (not that kind). TCI sent out a cable guy and a software guy. The cable guy went down the street and climbed the pole to enable my connection. The software guy sat in my chair for the first 3 hours playing Moto Racer. The cable guy couldn't seem to get enough throughput at the cable modem and ended up replacing all the interior cable wire in the house and installed a Qintal splitter that also plugs into an electrical outlet (presumably to boost the signal). The cable modem still wouldn't lock on the signal, so the software guy and the cable guy looked at each other for a while and wondered if the modem was defective. After a while the cable guy climbed back up the pole (sort of like Green Acres) and found that his initial work may have enabled the wrong house (it was a Saturday and he looked like he had enjoyed the night before). On the second trip up the pole he was successful in getting the modem to connect. The software guy then gave me a 5 minute training session and they hurried off to their next install. I think I paid $99 for an installation process that easily cost the cable company at least double that amount.

I think Case and Pittman are to be commended for doing all they can to get on the "dumb pipes" for as low a price as possible without having to buy a cable company.

I do love the speed but will try DSL if it becomes available in my small Connecticut town. Good trading.
