Clinton intervenes in Kashmir dispute

Washington speaks out

US President Bill Clinton is calling on Pakistan to withdraw hundreds of armed Muslim militants from Indian-controlled Kashmir, to defuse tension in the area.

The move comes as India has begun shelling supply routes inside Pakistan it says are supporting infiltrators on their side of the Line of Control. ...


..The BBC State Department Correspondent, Richard Lister, says Washington usually goes out of its way to avoid giving the appearance of taking sides in the Kashmir dispute.

But he says it is clear that President Clinton believes Pakistan can use its influence with the militants.

President Clinton, who on Monday spoke to the Indian Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has urged both Delhi and Islamabad to return to the negotiating table.

China has also called for a negotiated settlement to the conflict.

But India has said talks with Pakistan are possible only after the infiltrators are "withdrawn".


India targets Pakistani bases

Pakistan says that during the last 48 hours, Indian artillery shelling has become more intense, and that three or four offensives had been launched on Pakistani posts near the Line of Control.....
