Craig, I expect the Microdrive will find a market in notebook computers, replacing existing disk drives. But it will still have to compete with flash memory even in this logical application. A flash memory would extend battery life in comparison (or allow a smaller, lighter battery), and would result in a lighter weight package than a unit containing a microdrive. The Microdrive is more like an improvement to an existing technology. The flash memory represents a new technology with features unavailable from any older technology that involves moving parts. One application I can see with flash memory, which would outperform a Microdrive, would be an ultra light weight computer with near full size keyboard, screen size about half normal height, but about the same width, wireless CDMA modem, including voice recognition software to allow some text entry without a keyboard, as well as voice commands. This package would weigh probably less than 2 lbs. and would allow most of the versatility of heavier laptops, plus wireless communication. |
