i think us amateurs can be winners. my take on the mutual funds not beating the s&p is that they are like the s&p with a few differences. the sector funds that are hot always beat the s&p and the sector funds that are cold always loses. the big mofo funds always mirror the s&p and will rarely beat it because of expenses.

amateurs can pick a select few winners, of course, we can also pick losers. the difference is the risk/reward and how one studies one's picks. i'm personally doing better than the s&p, but the game is early...until i'm fat, old, dumb, and happy, the game goes on. the older i get, the less risks i'll take. the more money i have, the more i'll do capital preservation. that's the way the game should be played, imo.
