There is another way that Kumar could be half right and half wrong. Suppose there were to be a write-off in 2Q but one which was not mainly about inventory. We know that Rosen and his office are concentrating on streamlining COMPAQ orienting it more towards the internet. We have seen some structural changes in the move to 4 dealers. We know theer are many otehrs in the pipeline.

This streamlining and restructuring could involve additional lay-offs not only of senior and middle management postions but across the board. There have been rumours on some public boards of very large additional lay-offs. The termination packages would be a one-time cost that could be taken this quarter or next and would create a loss. This is not the same as an operating loss. Indeed, it is possible that WS would regard such cuts and consequent losses as a good sign that serious restructuring is taking place. Poor operating results in the 2Q might become relatively unimportant - or have limited effect as the street looks to the future.
