The fact that the economy was soft in "91 had little to do with that little third rate despot Saddam. And you can put millions of dollars of the S & L cleanup costs on the Bush's tab too. One of the other charmed Bush brothers, Neil I believe, played a major role in gutting and looting numerous banking establishments in Colorado. For a real look at the Bush dealings, see Texas investigative journalist Pete Brewton's book on George Bush.

Re: the price of oil during desert storm, the fact that the president was an oilman has to be considered as a variable in our military response to Kuwait's troubles. The prices shot up long enough to double GW Bush's fortunes.

As for American dependence on oil, it NEEDS to be curtailed. Since 1987 the number of roadways in this country have increased by only 1% yet number of miles driven is up 35%. Looked at late model used cars lately? A three year old car is likely to have close to 100k miles on it! It is insane. There is no need for the average driver to spend that many hours in a vehicle every year to live a reasonable and prosperous life. Only put 2000 miles on mine last year.
