I experience that problem lots of times on MSFT options. They don't have the options for the month following earnings releases. MSFT almost always releases earnings after expiration (at least in the last little while--a year or so). Based upon past experience, they may start trading as early as next week. "johnd" knows something on the subject.

As for myself, I used to go further out but recently have decided to just go with options expiring a week before earnings (sometimes only 1 trading day before). I hope to capitalize on the anticipation of the good news on Office2k revenue rather than the news itself. The actual good news would reflected in my leaps options. The day of expiration could have big spikes if the general feeling on the earnings is very positive.
